  • CEO
    Leeds, UK

    What I do at Datatrial:

I do make the tea – when I think about it, a lot more tea than actually I drink – Emma seems to be the main beneficiary of this. Try to build a company that all the participants can be proud of.

What I like about working at Datatrial:

That the Company gets stronger with every year.  Datatrial has now reached a size where every day there is always somebody doing something that makes it a better Company.  That there is a personality that the Company has developed with a strong desire to do a good job for our customers. (It may sound like an off the shelf CEO comment but its very satisfying for me to see a team of people who will go the extra mile because it’s the right thing to do)

How medicine has positively impacted my family’s life:

It’s a one off incident but it was the most momentous personal experience of the power of medicine I can remember. It was when my daughter, who was six at the time, caught Malaria while in Botswana. It was diagnosed early but I will always remember how the injections she received turned this limp, feverish child back into my daughter.

Some of the things I enjoy doing outside of work:

Cycling has been big recently for me. It started as an idea to reduce fuel usage but a new bike has re-awakened an enthusiasm that was fading with passing years. I am going to easily exceed my target of 2500 miles commuting to work in one year.  I would like to talk about how I spend my time sailing when I’m not at work but with three children under ten and no boat it’s just not happened recently. This will be sorted out in the future!

    My favourite movie and book:

Pulp Fiction and stories by Iain Banks.

  • Study Delivery Manager
    Edinburgh, Scotland

    What I do at Datatrial:

I am a Study Delivery Manager -  I’m involved in keeping projects moving and also doing the work to keep them moving.

What I like about working at Datatrial:

It’s satisfying to know that the work we do some day will contribute to the well-being of patients, even if it’s preventing a potentially harmful drug getting to market.

Some of the things I enjoy doing outside of work:

I love spending time with my new baby nephew, making stained glass panels and going on holiday.

    My favourite movie and book:

I generally don’t have favourites but I enjoy books by Tess Gerritson and the most recent movie I saw which I really enjoyed was A Beautiful Mind having missed it when it hit the box office years ago!

  • Inside Sales Representative
    Carlisle, Cumbria, UK

What do I do at Datatrial:

I am responsible for keeping us in the loop.  I speak with prospective clients regarding their clinical trials to see if there is a good fit between them and Datatrial.

What I like about working at Datatrial:

I genuinely look forward to coming to ‘work’.   Being able to speak with every person in the company on a professional and personal level makes things really easy.  I also have a great view over the Tyne river.

How  medicine positively affected my family's life:

Fortunately, I have a relatively healthy family and apart from the occasional cold or headache have never been reliant on medicine.  A very good friend of mine on the other hand had a mother who had MS.  This was very difficult for them and to hear of new medicines and therapies which aid those with MS is encouraging to hear.

Some things I enjoy doing outside of work:

Living and working in Newcastle, it may not come as a surprise that I am a Newcastle United fan.  Twice a week I play football with friends and occasionally feel I could make the NUFC 1st XI, particularly at the moment.  I have a strong affinity for music and regularly go to musical and theatrical performances.

    My favourite book and movie:

Although I don’t go to the cinema that often, I do rent films out every so often when I can watch them with a cup of tea.  My favourite director is Quentin Tarantino due to his meticulous eye for detail and constant ‘70s cinema references and my favorite genre is Asian cinema – films such as Hero, House of Flying Daggers and older films like Fist of Legend and Twin Warriors staring Jet Li.

  • Ben
    Study Delivery Manager
    Cambridge, UK

    What I do at Datatrial:

Build studies in Oracle Clinical and the swizzy new nowEDC2.  I also do discrepancy management for fun.  And I’m usually on hand to test (and break) other people’s hard work.

What I like about working at Datatrial:

The variety of the work.  Also, working in an office where you could speak to almost anyone without having to use a phone.  A desk with a view of the River Tyne is also a great bonus!

Some of the things I enjoy doing outside of work:

Big fan of movies and continue to grow my DVD collection.  Also enjoy exercise, looking out of the window, long walks to the shop next door, and whining.

    My favourite movie and book:

Favourite movie is Aliens.  Group of professionals working together to overcome adversity.  A lot like Datatrial.  But without the guns, robots or spaceships.  Or Aliens.  Favourite book is Sword of Shannara.  Lord of the Rings for kids, but still a rip roaring read!

  • Study Delivery Manager
    Wilmington, NC

    What I do at Datatrial:

A little bit of this and a little bit of that! I am a Study Delivery Manager in the US office, and my day to day activities could range from system validation, procedure programming, tracking and raising queries for both our paper and nowEDC studies and data cleaning. I also spend part of my day interacting with clients.

What I like about working at Datatrial:

No matter what level you are in Study Delivery you are apart of almost every aspect of each study; whether its study start up, maintaining the study or closing the study.  Everyone gets an opportunity to feel like they have contributed to improving treatments for diseases that affect at least one person they know.

How medicine has positively impacted my family’s life:

Suffering from chronic migraines and asthma I have seen tremendous breakthroughs in treatment and prevention.  The migraine medicine and asthma treatments I take now versus what I took 10 years ago are totally different. I am able to get almost instant relief, before I would have to wait for what felt like hours.  My paternal grandfather died from an asthma attack 27 years ago. I can only wonder if he had the treatments that are available today if he would have survived.

Some of the things I enjoy doing outside of work:

SPORTS, SPORTS and SPORTS!  Whether its watching it or playing it I love being physically active. Some of my favorites are basketball, boxing bootcamp, tennis, swimming, softball and shopping. Yes, shopping is a sport (or at least it should be!).  I also enjoy traveling, watching movies and relaxing.

    My favorite movie and book:

What a very difficult question, so I will go with my favorite recent movie which is Taken.  As for books, I don’t have a clear cut favorite but I have always liked To Kill a Mockingbird.

  • Statistician
    Paris, France

    What I do at Datatrial:

Statistical analysis, statistical reports and general SAS programming.

What I like about working at Datatrial:

I like to be part of the drug development process, and apply my mathematical/statistical skills to it.

How medicine has positively impacted my family’s life:

My Dad has high cholesterol.  He is taking medicine for this which makes him feel better.

Some of the things I enjoy doing outside of work:

Since I have been living in the UK (I am French), I enjoy discovering the North East of England with my little family.

    My favourite movie and book:

I like Super-hero movies like X-Men, Watchmen, Fantastic 4...: it is really impressive to watch it especially at the cinema.  Except for statistical books for theory refreshment, I don't read a lot but to improve my English I try to read some classic books like Sherlock Holmes on my iPhone.

  • CFO
    Gateshead, UK

    What I do at Datatrial:

All things financially related although, as with many growing organisations of our size, my role is wide and varied. At the end of the year I do get to count the beans and hopefully find enough left over to reinvest in order to provide an even better service for our customers.

What I like about working at Datatrial:

Working with a talented and committed team with no two days the same.

How medicine has positively impacted my family’s life:

Medicines help in controlling the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Muscular Dystrophy, both of which have affected my family. Sadly, there are no cures yet but, hopefully, ongoing clinical trials will make a significant breakthrough in the not too distant future.

Some of the things I enjoy doing outside of work:

As both my wife and daughter play, golf is high on the list for leisure time. Once my daughter starts hitting it further than me (she is 12 and it won’t be long) I may not play as much!!  I also do a fair bit of cycling, usually with my son. Despite my investment in new cycling technology he is invariably a dot on the horizon. It’s good to compete!

    My favourite movie and book:

Too many movies to single one out but I will watch anything with Jack Nicholson in. I am a voracious reader (including of a thesaurus) and especially enjoy US crime writers such as Michael Connelly and James Lee Burke.  If you want to visit Louisiana and save on travel expenses, read Burke!

  • COO
    Bolton, UK

What do I do at Datatrial:

I don’t make the tea! But apart from that, anything that needs to be done. My role is a commercial one with overall responsibility for operational delivery, sales and marketing.

What I like about working at Datatrial:

That no day is the same! Working in service delivery means we get to meet and work with a wide variety of different people globally.  And they’re all passionate about what they do.  The team here is expert at adapting to the unique requirements of our customers.  It’s a challenging but very satisfying environment.

How medicine has positively impacted my family’s life:

The biggest impact on all of our lives has been around medical skill and knowledge rather than specific drug treatment (giving birth and the skills of both plastic and orthopaedic surgeons).

Some of the things I enjoy doing outside of work:

With 3 small boys, there is a never a dull moment in our house but with good planning, most of my free time is spent singing.  I sing with Northern Sinfonia Chorus here in Newcastle and I’m also in a small vocal group called the Flash Gordons.

    My favourite movie and book:

Most of the movies I see repeatedly are Disney or Harry Potter but I do love a good story (and a few tears) so most of the films by M. Night Shyamalan appeal to me.  And my favourite book has to be The Time Travelers Wife by Audrey Niffeneger.

  • Study Delivery Associate
    Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK

    What I do at Datatrial:
Lots of paperwork and training. (Though that’s just at the minute; hopefully it’ll be doing electronic data capture setup when I finish the paperwork and training.)

What I like about working at Datatrial:
The fact it feels like I’m doing something useful to more than just the people directly around me, and the work is genuinely interesting, which is a big rarity.

    My personal hero:
Nikola Tesla, mostly for his later career, where he went from very competent scientist to the archetypal mad scientist—yet still managed to produce a lot of useful inventions and papers.

Some of the things I enjoy doing outside of work:
Write campaign plot for role-playing games or work on Live Action Role-play kit. Depends on if I’ve armour to finish or a game running at the time.

    My favourite movie and book:
Favourite movie is “Ghost in the Shell,” and “Nightwatch” from the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett for favourite book. (And just in case you wanted to know … favourite game is “Baldur’s Gate,” ‘cause I game a lot more than I watch movies.)

  • Office Manager
    Shotley Bridge, County Durham, UK

    What I do at Datatrial:

My role is pretty diverse - I manage the day to day running of the UK office, I am also responsible for both maintaining the Company accounts and for any Human Resources issues.

What I like about working at Datatrial:

I like the fact that my role allows me to work in a variety of different areas so that I can learn new disciplines. I also enjoy working alongside some great people here at Datatrial.

How medicine has positively impacted my family’s life:

My husband was diagnosed with Crohns Disease a couple of years ago and after two major operations he has been advised that he will have to take drugs everyday for the rest of his life. Advancements in new medicines could hopefully prevent him from having any further operations in future!

Some of the things I enjoy doing outside of work:

My favourite pastimes are shopping and traveling! I also enjoy going out for meals with friends and family, going to the cinema and keeping fit.   I’ve also discovered recently that I enjoy gardening despite feeling too young to do so…

    My favourite movie and book:

I love loads of different films but I think my favourite would have to be Moulin Rouge. Marion Keyes is my favourite author - her books tend to be a very light hearted read I often find myself laughing out loud when reading them.
